“World Expo 2010 Shanghai China” is the world's largest international expo in history with over 200 countries taking part. The expo is located in a vast area of 328 hectares on both banks of Huangpu River, running through the center of Shanghai City. 70 million visitors are expected, topping the 64 million at Osaka Expo in 1970, the largest ever number on record.

Shanghai Taiyo Kogyo was awarded many projects including major countries' pavilions and corporate pavilions. Among the structures commissioned by the Bureau of Shanghai World Expo Coordination is a large cover along the “Expo Boulevard” stretching 840m with a width of up to 97m. This large structure acts as a landmark in the Pudong area, centrally located amongst foot traffic, this structure stands out with its enormous size and impressive design.

This massive suspension membrane structure covers a large space of approximately 65,000 square meters consisting of 50 masts, cables and membrane roof. There are 69 differently shaped membrane roof panels, the biggest of which is 2,000 square meters. This is the largest scale project ever attempted, Shanghai Taiyo Kogyo resolved issues with high-strength “polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) coated glass fiber fabric” and an inventive design approach.

Besides the mega-scale suspension membrane structure “Expo Boulevard,” Shanghai Taiyo took part in 16 projects including major countries' pavilions and corporate pavilions such as Japan Pavilion, German Pavilion, Italian Pavilion and Norwegian Pavilion, and successfully created those membrane structures for this world expo where new technologies are introduced to the public.

Looking ahead to the future after the Expo, Shanghai Taiyo Kogyo has been awarded the contract for three membrane structures at the upcoming The Universiade 2011 totaling 110,000 square meters. Shanghai Taiyo Kogyo will also supply the 30,000 square meters Baoan Stadium and a 16,000 square meters stadium for Asian Games 2010 which will be held in Guangzhou this fall. We relish the opportunity to work on such challenging projects and look forward to furthering our technical abilities well into the future.

Brief overview of the membrane structure facilities for “Expo 2010 Shanghai” is as follows:
