Shanghai Taiyo Kogyo Corporation has completed the ETFE canopy for Kingboard Square in Shanghai, China.

The ETFE canopy covers the link bridge which connects several retail and office buildings. The link bridge and the canopy is shaped in the form of the Kanji character “human”, making it easily recognizable as an integral center of the King Board Group Brand. The canopy consists of 300 pieces of air cushions made by ETFE film material. Each cushion has a unique geometry of diamonds and triangles. In order to follow the geometry of the primary steel which the ETFE cushions are to be attached to, the patterning was based on on-site measurement of the steel structure. In total, the canopy covers an area of 6,000 square meters.

The ETFE material allows ample light beneath the canopy while protecting the visitors from rain and other natural elements. With the addition of a LED lighting system, the canopy becomes an eye-catching structure.

Shanghai Taiyo Kogyo worked with architect Wong & Ouyang (HK) Ltd., and general contractor Tang, Chenhua to realize the project.

The project was completed in October 2017 with high praise from the client regarding the quality, construction management, after service, and other factors.

The project received recognition by the International Achievement Awards hosted by Industrial Fabrics Association International (IFAI), as the Award of Excellence project in the Air Structures category.
