Lakhta Center with large-scale ETFE atrium completed
2020/12/07

Lakhta Center which includes Europe’s largest tower, Lakhta Tower, is a complex facility with focus on sustainability. Located in St. Petersburg, Russia, Lakhta Center is a large-scale complex facility designed with an atrium that runs lengthwise of the building roof. The atrium is consisted of ETFE film cushions.

Taiyo Europe GmbH was contracted to engineer, fabricate and install the ETFE film cushions and the related steel work. A total of 4,090 square meters of surface was covered using ETFE panels, to complete the structure in late 2019.

The completed atrium is 300 meters long. The roofline of the building is designed in a hyperbolic curve, with a highest point being 60 meters from ground.

The project proved to be challenging requiring a high level of technical precision, due to its complex form of the steel structure and the installation works during the cold winter season in Russia.

Lakhta Center was certified the LEED Platinum level, making it one of the five most eco-friendly skyscrapers in the world. LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is a green building certification program, developed by the non-profit USGBC (U.S. Green Building Council). In addition, the building received an Award of Excellence from the 2020 CTBUH Annual Awards hosted by CTBUH (Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat) in 5 categories, ‘Best Tall Building 400 meters and above’, ‘ Structural Engineering ‘, ‘Façade Engineering’, ‘Construction’ and ‘ Geotechnical Engineering’.

Lakhta Center is set to open in 2021.
