Taiyo Europe GmbH (Germany) was tasked with replacing the roof for a velodrome structure in Switzerland.

Originally completed in 2002, The World Cycling Centre in Aigle, Switzerland is an elite coaching and training center for cyclists, and is home to the headquarters of the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI). The facility houses training facility for athletes training in the road, track and BMX sport, including a 200meter wooden indoor track, BMX racing track, and other related facilities. The velodrome’s indoor track is covered by a double layer pneumatic membrane structure, supported by a Tensegrity type lightweight metal structure. The roof spans a diameter of 90m x 70m, making it one of the largest structures of its kind in the world.

To replace the existing roof, Taiyo Europe GmbH collaborated with engineering firm BGC SA and Tensys to design, fabricate and install the new roof, as well as the removal of the existing roof. Challenges of the project included a tight 4-week installation schedule, with the added obstacle of works taking place during the harsh cold winter in Switzerland, both of which were overcome through months of detailed planning by the team. Construction was completed in March 2018.

The completed 2 layer PVC air-dome, covers an area of 5,000 square meters and continues to function as a training hub for future athletes.
